Description of RDPG Events at FNCE

Sunday 9/25/11

3:30-5:00 PM Educational Session by RDPG

Examining the American Diet Using New Methods for Estimating Usual Food Intake

Janet Tooze, PhD, MPH, Wake Forest University and Susan Krebs-Smith, PhD, MPH, RD, National Cancer Institute, presented an interesting and challenging session to an audience of about 100 attendees.

This topic is being discussed in depth in the Measurement Error Webinar Series, a 12-part series presented by NCI on accounting for measurement error in dietary intake data. RDPG members who missed this session can check the link for the series schedule.  Sessions already presented are also available as recorded sessions.

Monday 9/26/11

7:30-9:00 AM RDPG Member Breakfast Sponsored by Solae

 Innovation through Nature http://www.solae.com

The ADA Research Dietetic Practice Group (RDPG) held the annual FNCE RDPG Member Breakfast on September 26, 2011 from 7:30-9 am.   The event provided members with the opportunity to network, discuss current RDPG activities, provide announcements of interest to members, and recognize RDPG award winners.  A complimentary breakfast was made possible by this year’s sponsor, Solae LLC.

The agenda included introductions and a welcome from this year’s Chair, James Swain.  He summarized goals for this year and announced other RDPG activities at FNCE.  He also encouraged members to provide recommendations regarding topics for RDPG session proposals for next year’s FNCE program. Martha McMurry, our Past-Chair, presented member awards and encouraged attendees to consider applying for next year’s RDPG awards. Nominating Committee members distributed information about the upcoming FNCE election, and encouraged members to participate by volunteering or suggesting names for the upcoming RDPG officer positions available (Chair-Elect, Treasurer, and Nominating Committee Member).

Chair James Swain introduced Annie Krsyl, the RDPG’s ADA-DPG Relations Manager, who reported on current ADA activities of interest to members. (photo to left)

Mark Cope, PhD, gave an excellent presentation regarding White Hat Bias (see Mark Cope Slides) and distributed useful references.  He explained how this term has been recently coined to describe a possible bias leading to the distortion of information in the service of what may be perceived to be “righteous” ends.  The importance of considering all of the evidence-base when presenting findings was discussed, with examples provided.

Chair-Elect Chris Taylor also spoke to members. (Photo to right).

Chair Swain concluded the meeting by extending appreciation to the sponsor of the meeting, Solae, and thanking RDPG members for their participation.

Thank you to RDPG Nominating Committee member Catherine Champagne for sharing her photos from the FNCE meeting.
